We hope that you will plan to attend the 22nd Annual Capital Defense Workshop at the downtown Richmond Marriott. We plan to start at noon on Thursday, November 20, and will wrap up by 3:30 p.m. on Friday, November 21. This program, sponsored by the Criminal Law Section of The Virginia Bar Association, is designed for criminal defense attorneys willing to accept appointment in capital cases. Part-time prosecutors may not attend the workshop, even though part of their practice may include court-appointed cases for criminal defendants. Conference attendees staying at the Richmond Marriott can receive a reduced per night group rate by calling 804-643-3400 by November 1. Be sure to identify yourself as being with The Virginia Bar Association Capital Defense Workshop.
The Virginia Law Foundation provides financial assistance that allows this workshop to be presented with only a nominal charge to registrants to cover expenses over and above grant funding. The workshop provides a minimum of ten hours of specialized capital defense training, including four hours of forensic training, as required by § 19.2-163.8 of the Virginia Code. Members of the planning committee include Mathew Engle, Samuel W. Dworkin, Joseph T. Flood, Robert E. Lee, Jr., Elizabeth J. Peiffer, Douglas A. Ramseur, Jon Sheldon, and Michael Lasher.
Registrants are required to physically sign the registration form. The signature certifies that the registrant is a lawyer and, if eligible, will accept capital case appointments, or the registrant is a mitigation specialist or investigator employed by a capital defender office.
