Each January at the VBA Annual Meeting the association's Young Lawyers Division thanks members whose contributions stand out above all others.

During the Friday night banquet in Williamsburg, 2016 YLD Chair Steven P. Gould announced the recipients of the Emerson G. Spies Award and the Sandra P. Thompson Award.

Williams of Kutak Rock LLP in Richmond accepted the Emerson G. Spies Award for enthusiasm, loyalty and dedication in  given year by a YLD member.

"It is appropriate for us to honor not one, but two of our members for this award and their contributions over the last year," Gould said.

"The first recipient has worn many, many hats this year. In fact, he has chaired no fewer than four of our committees in the YLD. ... He has accepted every challenge put to him and selflessly given of his time to help strengthen our division. ... Seth J. Ragosta."

Jeremy S. Williams accepts Emerson G. Spies Award from YLD Chair Steven P. GouldOf Williams, who served as YLD chair-elect in 2016, the YLD chair said, "He led the comprehensive review of the Young Lawyers Division's more than 50 projects. He spent countless hours examining our strengths and weaknesses in a very, very honest manner. ... Based on the work that he led ... we have a leaner and a more focused YLD." Gould said Williams also served as an invaluable sounding board during Gould's year as YLD chair.

In 2017, Williams is serving as the YLD chair.

Sandra P. Thompson Award recipient

The Sandra P. Thompson Award, named after a longtime employee of the VBA, recognizes an individual with a long history of outstanding service to the YLD. The recipient was Nupur S. Bal of the Richmond law firm DeFazio Bal PC. She was immediate past chair of the YLD in 2016.

Nupur S. Bal receives Sandra P. Thompson Award-2016"This year's recipient has done it all in the YLD," Gould said of Bal. "She began her involvement by leading our regional membership efforts in Northern Virginia. She then guided our membership efforts on a statewide basis. It was clear to everyone what her leadership skills were and she then became one of our officers in the YLD ... including partnering with [2015 VBA President Harry M. "Pete" Johnson III] on his successful YLD leadership series.

"She's brought tremendous energy and vitality to the YLD with everything she has done. She has served as a mentor to me and to many others."
