James Patrick Guy II, VBA president for 2016, announced at the VBA winter meeting this month that 28 Virginia law firms so far have signed on to the VBA Pro Bono Promise. An initiative of the VBA Pro Bono Council, the Pro Bono Promise is a vow to commit to putting forth the signers' best efforts to the goal of performing 2 percent of their annual billable work pro bono.

The objective is to have 50 law firms signed by the VBA statewide meeting in July and 75 by the spring of 2018.

"You'll be hearing if you're a lawyer leader or if you are a person of either authority or influence in one of our organizations very soon," Guy said. "We encourage you to join us in demonstrating the commitment of the Virginia Bar and our lawyers to ensuring access to justice for every Virginian."

In August, the VBA Pro Bono council contacted Virginia's 75 largest law firms and corporate law departments and asked them to sign the promise. Promise signers agree to identify a pro bono leader, develop an in-house pro bono program, conduct trainings, engage in awareness building, and make progress toward the 2 percent pro bono goal.
